Rufus lives in Birmingham, Alabama, the place Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called the most segregated place in the country. A place that in 1963 is full of civil rights activists organizing protests to show that separate is not equal. However, many grownups are afraid of losing their jobs if they participate. That's where the kids come in--they don't have any jobs to lose. So on a bright morning in May, Rufus and his friends join thousands of other students to peacefully protest in the park. When they're met with ferocious police dogs and high-pressure fire hoses, Rufus realizes that he and the other kids are the fire--and they will not be put out. Together they face the violence while singing freedom songs. And with the eyes of the world watching this shocking display of brute force against children, change finally begins to happen.
